Architectural Timber Claddings

Timber claddings offer a hard-wearing, protective layer against the elements and act as excellent insulators.

Here, at The Wood Yard we offer a wide range of different species (of claddings) to suit different and designs and budgets.

Species
The most popular claddings are those which are naturally resistant to decay hence Western Red Cedar, Siberian Larch, Thermowood and Accoya top the list. All of these offer fabulous protection if installed correctly and, by maintaining them to appropriate guidelines, they will last a lifetime and more. Other popular choices include Hemlock (vertical grain), Clear Douglas Fir, Redwood and Whitewood.

WESTERN RED CEDAR – The Popular Choice

Its straight grain and uniform texture makes Western Red Cedar one of the easiest timbers to work. It planes and sands very clearly and acts as a fabulous insulator. Structures built from Western Red Cedar will be cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Western Red Cedar weathers gradually which makes it extremely popular for exterior applications. Western Red Cedar has great finishing properties and takes a variety of coatings, paints and stains exceptionally well, provided it is dried and properly primed. The Wood Yard can supply cedar claddings primed, painted, stained, polished or in the sawn state.

Western Red Cedar has a low wood density which means it is unlikely to warp or twist. It will also dampen vibrations, making it popular in reducing or confining noise hence its use in panelling and moulding.

SIBERIAN LARCH CLADDING - For a Contemporary Feel

Larch is extremely hard wearing and is the perfect timber for cladding.  Siberian Larch offers an attractive and economical way to finish the exterior of both new and old buildings whilst, at the same time, providing a protective layer against the elements.  Its growth in popularity is due to the contemporary feel that it creates.

Siberian Larch has a pale yellow-orange/brown colour, it has as a low cost of installation and is low maintenance. Siberian Larch has a naturally high density which makes it Naturally Resistance to Decay – it’s one of the Toughest and Most Durable Softwoods in the World.

ACCOYA – The next Big Thing
Accoya® wood is the result of a proven wood modification technique and leading-edge patented technology which creates a high performance wood, ideal for external cladding.
Accoya® is a sustainable, Eco-Friendly & FSC certified wood. It is dimensionally stable, has outstanding durability and is perfect for coating.

Accoya® has properties that match or exceed those of the best tropical hardwoods and treated woods, yet is manufactured using wood from radiate pine – a sustainable sources.
Pale in colour Accoya takes a variety of paints stains and finishes and is virtually maintenance free.  Architects love Accoya – expect to hear more of this product.

CLEAR DOUGLAS FIR - The Designer's Choice

Douglas Fir has a light, rose colour, which darkens over time when exposed to UV rays. Douglas Fir machines to an exceptionally smooth, glossy finish and when dry it retains its shape and size without shrinking, swelling, cupping, warping, bowing or twisting.

Douglas Fir is available in a variety of grades suitable for many applications; its look is enhanced with the use of Clear coatings, transparent lacquer, varnishes, oils, wax, bright or subdued stains, tints etc

SCANDANAVIAN REDWOOD CLADDING - The Cost Effective Choice

Fifths Redwood is currently the most cost effective timber to choose for cladding. Whilst moderately resistant to decay, it requires coating or ideally pressure treating prior to being used for external applications such as cladding.

THERMOWOOD – An ideal choice for cladding

ThermoWood is a process which adapts the typical characteristics of softwoods to levels often found in tropical hardwoods; i.e. high durability and excellent stability.

The Thermowood process removes moisture from the timber which dramatically enhances the timber and prevents swelling when subjected to changes in relative humidity.

The process also offers a major resistance to fungal attack which means it is capable of resisting attack for up to 30 years.  Thermowood has an attractive golden brown appearance which, if left without any surface coating, will start to grey and weather in quite a short period of time.
